Wordful Wednesday

Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one ofyou with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the devil an opportunity.

Crafting A Valentines Swag

I really like to make things, especially when they are for decorating my home or giving as gifts. Here's a cute swag I made for my hutch. I wanted it to have an old fashioned feel to it, but still have the cutesy look. Here's how I did it...

I purchased some little 2-3 inch wooden hearts to use for another craft idea, and I used them as a pattern for my hearts.

I traced around the wooden heart, then added about 1/2 inch all they way around so that when I sewed it together it wouldn't be too small to work with. I traced my pattern on a piece of paper several times and wrote words in there that I wanted to embroider on the hearts. I did this so I would have an idea what would fit....sweetheart wasn't gonna fit, so I used words like Love, Sweet, Nice and Cute. :) If you don't like freehanding writing, type the words on the computer in a font you like, print them out big and use them to trace.

The materials I used were some muslin I had laying around, some cotton quilt batting (the thin kind, not that thick polyester stuff), some red embroidery thread, cotton lace with an old fashioned feel to it, and some wooden red beads I had left over from Christmas crafting.

Using my heart pattern, for each heart I cut out 2 hearts of muslin and one heart of batting. I traced the "word" onto one of my muslin cut out hearts and embroidered it red. As you can see I wasn't trying to make this look like smoothe script, it's easy stitching.
Then I layed the embroidered piece ON TOP of the batting heart coutout. Place the second muslin heart on top of that, like a sandwich with the batting on the outside. There is no right or wrong side to muslin, but if you are using a fabric that has a right or wrong side, here's what you want to remember. Put the batting on the WRONG side of the embroidered piece, then put the two fabric pieces RIGHT sides together. Stich them all together with a 1/4 inch seam leaving just about 1 1/2 inch space to turn it right side out.

Turn and press with an iron, don't worry about closing up the opening, just fold it in nicely and press it into place. Once you stitch around the edge with the blanket stitch it will keep it closed.
Here is how to do the blanket stitch around the edge. Tie a knot in your thread, and bring it through that opening so that your knot is inside the heart, bringing the needle up along the fine edge of your heart. Work your way around the edge:
Bring your needle forward about 1/4 inch and put into the fabric just off the edge as show in here...

As you push the needle out through the fine edge of the heart, keep the thread to the back, you are kind of making a loop.

Pull the needle all the way through, taking up the slack in your thread.

Snug it up and you have made a stitch, repeat this all the way around. PRACTICE on a scap first. :)

After you have finished as many hearts as you want (I made 5). Lay out your lace, beads and hearts on the ground, decide what you want it to look like, where you want the beads, or if you want them at all. :)

Using Ecru colored thread to match your lace, sew the beads in place along the lace.

Make hangers from the top of your hearts with 2-4 beads (vary lengths ever other heart). Sew them to the bottom of the lace and then hang where ever you like. :)

Simple and cute, just what I wanted...Happy Crafting!

Public Bathrooms.......

I'm on my soapbox today... care to join me? Lot's of room, hop on... :)

The story goes something like this...

I'm having a lovely day out; lunch and shopping with my best friend. All is well in my world, the birds are singing, the sun is shining, but there is something lurking in the darkness. Yes, down the hall and to the left (I am told by the clerk),....is the ladies restroom...(insert eery music here)...

As is usually the case I really NEED to go by the time I find the restroom located in the back corner of the store, through the double doors and down a long hallway. I enter, there are 3 stalls to choose from. Let's try door #1...

Lest I seem ungrateful, let me start by saying Thank You (to whoever builds these things). Thank you for designing doors for our privacy, it is appreciated. However, I must inform you that the average woman is more than 3 inches deep, no matter which way you turn her.

Yes, 3 inches is the allowance you have given. I push open the stall door and step inside. As I turn around to close the door I realize that there's something in the way...oh, it's ME...I am in the way. I try to make myself invisible, sucking in all the air I have and leaning back, trying to keep my bladder from bursting in the process, as well as keeping my purse and scarf from dangling into the toilet. Hmmm, that didn't work, so I step back, placing one leg on each side of the bowl...good thing I'm not wearing a skirt today. Finally, straddling the toilet, and clear of the door, I reach to close it, flashing an embarrassed smile at the woman walking by...oh, she'll lose that smirk in 2 seconds when she tries this maneuver herself.

Once inside I attempt to latch the door. Gee, this little slider doesn't quite reach the other side. Grabbing the little latch with two hands, I am forced to pull it up and to the right in order for the latch to reach....I wonder what this must sound like to the other "stall dweller".

I remove my purse so I can hang it on the.....Oh, the hook must be on the wall, because it's NOT on the door...hmmmm, nope, no hook? Ok, where am I supposed to put my purse? I sling it around my neck and let it dangle in front of me where it will hopefully be free from "contamination". I look around for the "seat protectors"...yeah, go ahead, call me a germ freak.

This particular topic makes me wonder if men design public bathrooms. The average man probably only sits on a toilet once a day, and that most likely takes place in the comfort of his nice clean home. The rest of the time, he stands.

Women on the other hand sit EVERY time, and we drink a lot of Starbucks, er,.. um,... I mean WATER during the day, so we most likely need to do this quite often. Do you have any idea how many people have sat there before me? When was the last time they showered? Did they just go the gym and get all sweaty? Ewww....I don't even want to think of all the possibilities....SO, I look around for the seat protectors, because who would design a bathroom without them? Well, it looks like someone did.

In most cases, there are none. In the case that they are provided, very often the holder is empty, or they are pressed in there so tightly that trying to remove one results in something akin to shredded paper. I begin the "papering" method...yes, you know it well. I carefully place a strip of toilet paper on each side of the seat. There is an art to this method. If the paper is too short, well, it's useless. If it's too long, it will slide off the seat just as I'm about to sit down. Once the papers are CAREFULLY laid in place and I've ever so slowly shimmied myself into position (so as not to cause a breeze that blows them to the floor), business can be taken care of. However, as I sit down, I notice something...

...I notice the HUGE gap between the door and the stall wall, it's got to be an inch or more. The kids standing by the sink, waiting for their Mom who's busy trying to shut the door in stall #2...are they staring at me? Are they seriously making faces at me? So, now I'm not sure if I should ignore them, wave, or give them the "Momma Eye". I decide to pretend not to see them, hoping they'll go away!

Once I've safely managed to put myself back together without dropping any of my personal belongings in the toilet, it's time to flush...this part is really frightening. I really want to open the door first and step outside to escape the water particles that will inevitably fly into the air with the force of the mega-industrial toilet, but that would be kinda rude, so I just press my foot against the flusher (yes, my foot,...I'm NOT touching that!), then face the door and hold my breath for fear of breathing in the unthinkable things that are flying into the air right now (I've seen Time Warp!).

After straddling the toilet once again and getting out the stall door, I head for the sink. I look around for somewhere to put my purse while I wash my hands, no hook, no shelf, ok...I guess I'll just do the "lean". This is the position where you sling your purse over your shoulder and onto your back, lean slightly to the side to keep it therem, not unlike the hunchback of Notre Dame. I do the sidestep from sink to sink looking for the one soap dispenser that has something in it.

Now that I finally have a little dab of soap, I flip up the water lever to be greeted by freezing cold water...because who wants hot water in a bathroom???? I feverishly scrub my hands as my fingers turn blue from the cold, all the while keeping my purse layed across my back. I turn, to look for paper towels.

No such luck. I am faced with the ever useful "air dryer". I make my way to the dryer and begin the long journey of hand drying...after 10 minutes of rubbing the skin off the back of my hands, I resort to wiping them on my shirt, and turn to leave,...only to realize that after all that hard work of washing my hands someone expects me to touch the door handle???????? Do we need to discuss the number of people that DON'T wash their hands? Do we need to think of the people that changed diapers and didn't wash their hands? Not too mention little booger pickers that aren't even good at wiping...EWWWwwwwwww. Sorry, no, I'm NOT touching that handle.

Let's see, I have a couple of options here. I could stand there and wait for someone else to enter, stopping the door with my foot, then make my escape. I can use my shirt as a "glove" and just remember not to touch my shirt all day. I decide upon option #3. I run back the stall, push my way inside with my hip, grab a couple of squares of toilet paper and use them to open the door, holding the door open with my leg, I turn to make a long shot toward the trash can, hoping that it makes it ~ I never was a basketball player. I make the shot and head back down that long hallway, left with another bad bathroom memory burnt into my brain.

Is it just me? Am I just weird, or do you ever experience this? LOL

Hi...my name is Kathy,...and I'm a bathroom snob.

Remembering Merle...

We've lived in our house for 10 years. We'd only been here a couple of days when we met Merle. He was quite old at the time, and he and his wife Cathy lived just 4 houses down from us. To this day, I'm not sure if I've ever seen more joy pour out of a soul. He was old, he was worn, and he ALWAYS wore a smile.

Merle didn't waste time, he used every moment wisely. I believe it was during our first conversation with Merle that he asked us if we knew Jesus. His face lit up when we told him yes. He didn't stop there though. He wanted to be sure, so he asked about our walk, and our understanding of what salvation meant. He cared. He loved our Lord so very much, and was never ashamed, never afraid to share Him with anyone.

Shortly after we moved in, we had a large garage sale. We were combining two households, so you know this was a doozy. It drew in almost everyone in the neighborhood. From every person that lived on our street, we heard stories about the cantankerous old man that had lived in our house before we bought it, Mr. Burns. He was said to be an angry, grouchy, unkind, just plain ole mean man.

Everyone had something bad to say about Mr. Burns...everyone except for Merle. You see Merle came by once a week and took Mr. Burns out to lunch, he cared about Mr. Burns, and his main objective was to lead him to the foot of the cross. Merle relayed some things about Mr. Burns' 'personalilty', but he shared it with such humility and love that it was clear he was more concerned about this mans eternity than his here-and-now. Mr. Burns died, and I don't know if he ever accepted Jesus as his Lord. Merle planted those seeds. He hoped against hope. He saw no change, but he still came each week to pick him up and take him out to lunch. He still came by to help him with things that needed fixing around his house. He still chatted with him, and smiled. Only Jesus and Mr. Burns know for sure what happened with those seeds,...well, I suppose Merle knows too.

Merle was like that, always gentle, always loving, always kind. As the years passed by Merle took fewer walks, we would go down and visit him and Cathy every now and again. With a twinkle in his eye and chuckle in his voice he'd tell of how he'd broken his thigh bone by simply turning around. He didn't complain about the pain, he just smiled. We'd often see him with bandaged covering large areas of his bald head, or his ears. He'd relay to us how the Doctors had found more cancerous parts on his skin and had to cut them off, all the while, smiling and asking how WE were. He smiled and light heartedly told us of how half his body was purple from lack of circulation and the Dr. had to cut off a couple of toes. It was all in a days work to Merle...they way he saw it, the more time he spent in the Doctors office, the more opportunities he had to witness.

Merle was a joy to be around, a joy to talk to, I didn't want him to go, but I knew that it would happen. He wasn't only quite old, but his body was giving out, time and health weren't on his side. My heart broke for Cathy, they were so precious together and so obviously in love. She was slow moving, but she didn't have his health issues.

A few years ago Merle passed away. When I found out that he had died, I cried. I mostly cried for Cathy, for her loss, and her lonliness. However, when I thought of Merle, I smiled through my tears. I imagined him running to Jesus...RUNNING! I could see him in my mind (I still can when I close my eyes), and I see him laughing, singing and dancing with all his might before the Lord, praising with a strong voice. I can't wait to see him again someday, and the beautiful thing about that is that I KNOW I will. Merle didn't waste a moment of his life...he used it all to the glory of the Lord. Oh, if only I would use my life like Merle did...that's something to strive for.

Cathy still lives down the street. She has a wonderful family and someone is always there each day to visit her, shop with her, mow her lawn, cook, clean...they are there for her, and that makes me happy...but I just know she misses her man, and that makes my heart ache.

Merle wrote this poem. He gave us a copy of it, as I'm sure he gave one to every person he met. I came across it the other day, and wanted to share it with you...

~Time Passes By~
Seconds are swiftly passing by
Minutes and hours we cannot deny
Days and weeks we cannot retrieve
Jesus' salvation you must receive
Months and years they do not wait
Your soul will soon meet its fate
Three score and ten is now at hand
Saved or not your soul God demands
Time passes on if you are here or not
Separation day is coming in case you forgot
The goats on his left, the sheep on his right
Heaven will be all day for there is no night
Be sure you accept Jesus so I'll see you my friend
For this will be eternity where there is no end.
~Merle Jennings~
Have a beautiful, Jesus filled day!

Craving Kettle Corn?

Well, I was! Last night we made popcorn. We don't usually eat popcorn, as a matter of fact, we didn't have any in the house, so when I was at the grocery yesterday I picked up a bottle of kernals. I've always been the "old fashioned" type and like popping my corn in a pot on the stove.

I was thinking back to when we went to the Cracker Christmas Festival in December at Fort Christmas. It's such a fun event with people dressed in historical costume and doing all sorts of demonstrations. One of the most popular booths at the festival is by far the Kettle Corn booth. As a matter of fact, the line was so long that we didn't get any Kettle Corn that day. However, we did stand right next to the tent and watch them make it in those huge Kettles...it was so cool.

So, anyhoooo, last night I decided to make popcorn, and I thought...gee, why can't I make kettle corn? So,....I did. My version at least....and it was pretty good!

In the bottom of my large heavy stock pot I put a drizzle of Olive Oil, and 1-2 Tbsp. Butter, then I added about 1/8-1/4 C. of raw (turbinado style) sugar. NOTE: I'm just tellin' you what I used, but regular sugar would be fine, I didn't measure anything because I was totally wingin' it.

I started to heat that up over med-high heat, then added 1/2 C. popcorn kernals. I put on the lid and shook the pot around over the heat.

Let's peek inside...it's gettin' steamy in there!

I let it sit for a few seconds, then swirl it around, over and over until it starts to pop...keep doing this until it is almost completely done popping, shake it up good (hold on to your lid!).  When it's just poppin every few seconds, keep shaking it, but don't set on direct heat...turn it off and look inside!

Remove the lid, sprinkle with a little salt, and Voila! Kettle Corn! It was soooooooo gooooood!

Elves in the Birdhouse...

The other evening, Stormie had some friends over. Yes,...Stormie IS my dog, and yes, she has friends. Human friends....little ones. I wonder if anyone else has neighborhood kids who come over to play with their dog?

Ok, back to my story. Stormies 3 friends were over and we were all in the backyard having a great time as they told me about the secret path that goes behind the gazebo...very cool...hmmm, I never saw that before. :)

Well, one of her friends, Austin (a young man about 7 yrs old), saw that we had a bird box on the large Pecan tree. He thought it was incredibly cool and we began to chat about it...

ME: "One time we had owls living in there"

AUSTIN: (eyes growing wide)..."what?"

ME: "One time we had some owls that were living in there. There were three of them, but they moved out now"

AUSTIN: (eyes are HUGE now, staring at me in wonder)..."Owvs?"

ME: "yes"

AUSTIN: "OWVS?!!!"

ME: "yeah, neat huh?"

AUSTIN: "You mean Santa's Elves lived in there???"

ME: "LOLOLOL, um, no, not them..OWLS...the birds"

AUSTIN: "Oh, ok"

He really believes in them...elves.

And he really thought they could have lived in that box. :)

Oh the wonder of children.

Have a beautiful day!

Wordful Wednesday

"Do not fret because of evildoers,
Be not envious toward wrongdoers.
For they will wither quickly like the
grass
And fade like the green herb.
Trust in the Lord and do good;
Dwell in the land and cultivate
faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord;
And He will give you the desires of
your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord,
Turst also in Him, and He will do it.
He will bring forth your
righteousness as the light
And your judgment as the noonday."
Psalm 37: 1-6

Thank you, Lord, for this beautiful day that you have opened up before me. Please guide me through each step today....

Bathroom Fixer-Upper

DIY Day @ ASPTL

My guest bathroom needed a face lift. Since re-tiling and new sink/counter/cabinet weren't exactly in the budget, here is what I did...
OLD
Ugly mirror, boring light fixture, plain towel ring
(I put them there, so I can insult them, LOL)

NEW
Pretty mirror (see below for details), cozy light fixture, cute towel shelf

Detail of my little shelf :)

OLD
(This is so you can see the wall that is reflected,
because I forgot to take a before photo)
Notice the plain towel bar and lonely framed photo

We knocked out the towel bar and repainted the wall.
Added a shelf for a different look for haning towels

Here is my little shelf, I DO plan to do something with this frame, but I haven't quite decided yet, so here it sits.. :)

The mirror project...once again, I forgot to take a before photo. This was a $20 mirror from Old Time Pottery. It was Sparkling Gold in color, but I knew I could make it what I wanted. I lightly sanded the surface and coated it with 2 coats of plain brown craft paint...

Then I "painted" it with a dark stain. Being careful to brush away drips and keep it dark in the corners and crevices. When you "paint" with stain, it usually takes about 1 week to fully dry.

In keeping with my "seashell" theme (due to the lovely *smirk* seafoam green toilet, tub and tile accents), I cut a branch off my Pecan tree and tied it with ribbon to 2 hooks. I then looped ribbon along it and hot-glued seashells, sea-stars, and little green stones. No curtain is really needed here, so I just wanted to accent the window.

Have a beautiful and Creative Day!

Once Upon A Time...There was a Hungry Horse...

Well, there still is actually. Hungry Horse is a restaurant in Boerne, TX. Among other greats; food, service, atmosphere, prices, and sweet tea, they make a great Chicken Tortilla Soup. I was there last winter, and it was the first time I ever had a bowl of that soup. They served it with this fantastic bran muffin...yup, you heard me right, it went wonderfully with the soup too! I fell in love with this soup and went back again and again while I was in town.

If you want to try it though, you'd better travel during the winter months, because it is a seasonal item on their menu. No worries if you are there any other time of the year, you are SURE to find something yummy!

One night, while I was at my sister, Debbie's house, she made Chicken Tortilla Soup for dinner. Her version was sooooo close to the soup I had at The Hungry Horse, it was fantastic! She says that I MUST give credit for this soup to her son, Jake (he's a natural born chef ), as she learned how to make it from him. However, I forgot to get the recipe.!

~Debbie~

Fast forward....I was grocery shopping the other day, it was COLD outside, and I started thinking about that soup. I really began to NEED it, LOL. I quickly dialed my sister in TX and had her relay to me what I needed and how to put it together.

That night I ate this...

and I served it with Jalapeno and Cheddar Cheese Cornbread ~ perfect for soaking up the broth!

I also had it the next day for lunch and then again for dinner....MMMmmmmm!

Capt. Mike's opinon? Well, let's just say it's got some Texas heat that he isn't too keen on. He ate it, he even had some the second night, but he didn't enjoy the burn in the back of his throat....sorry sweet love! More for me!

For the recipe go here....do this if you'd like to try roasting chilis! It takes some time, but it is WELL worth the effort.
If you want a "quickie" version...go here! I haven't tried this one, but created it to mimic the original as closely as possible while making it much faster and easier.
Have a Spicy Day!

Now what???

Thanksgiving, Christmas, family visits, New Years,....now what?

I finished taking all the inside decorations down yesterday,...the house looks naked. It's funny how before I decorated, it didn't look naked at all, but once I took down all the colorful lights, sparkling decorations, and jingling bells, it just feels blank. What now?

Is it wrong that I'm already thinking about decorating my house for Valentines? I mean, I'm not gonna do it YET, but I'm thinkin' on it...what "decor" goes with January? It's not cold enough here for "winter" decor, so maybe I should just spend the whole month cleaning...gee...that sounds fun.

Hmmmm, what do you do in January???

I do have some goals...not resolutsions, just goals...I'd like to finish the quilt I've been working on for my Mom (for years)...getting it to her while it's still cold would be a good idea, ya' think?

I'd like to finish up some sewing projects....well, I'd like to START them, and then finish them...

I'd really like to do what I said I was gonna do and following a reading plan to read through the entire Bible in one year...I'm one day behind on that already...ugh! I'll be the first to admit that as much as I've read and studied God's Word in the last 15 years, even though I've read several books over and over, I haven't read ALL of it...*sigh*...

Oh yeah, and then there's that whole "I'm gonna start jogging again"....ya, ya...blah blah blah...but REALLY,...I am, you just wait and see...I'm SERIOUS!!!....it's just that today it feels cold (to me)...and um, I have to type this blog,...and um, this coffee is so warm and yummy,...and these jammy pants are comfy...and um....yup...you know the routine. But really, I AM going to start jogging again. :)

So,....what are you going to do this January? Just curious. :)

Have a beautiful day!
