Tackle it Tuesday - Garden Stuff...

Tackle It Tuesday Meme

We had a LOT of rain recently and instead of being good for my garden, it seemed to wash all the nutrients right out of the soil. There didn't seem to be enough breaks (that I was willing to take) to get out there and fortify the garden with compost, so it started to really break down badly.

MY EXCUSE (LOL):

Here in Florida, we have a basically "sandy soil", and rains will wash compost and nutrients right through the needed root layers. It is important to consistently feed the garden with organic compost. However, I will admit to my laziness on this point. It has been HOT and HUMID!!! When it's cool enough to get outside, it means that it is about to rain, so you have to work really fast and get a little bit done before you get struck by lightening (we are the lightening strike capital you know, lol). It is also cool right after it rains, but then you get eaten alive by the most monstrous, hungry mosquitos!!!! So, I have basically neglected my poor little veggie patch, and it needs tending.

Today I was determined to get out there and turn under my green bean plants in order to let them decomose and return nitrogen to the soil. It's a small patch, but it's so hot and humid, that it's hard to be out there for long!!! Yuck. I also need to pick my next to last pinapple and cut up and freeze the 3 pineapples I have in my fridge for smoothies, yum! Pineapples don't seem to care about sandy soil, they grow great here!

Here I go...That green clump in the middle is my little bean patch before turning it under...

After turning it under and breaking it up. I use a shovel, and do it by hand, as I don't have a tiller, so it's a bit of work... I will need to get some organic compost to spread over the top and bury the "remains", lol. Now I am HOT and in need of a shower because I was out there for 20 minutes, lol. Will winter ever come? :)

Another project I REALLY need to tackle today is the fabric that I have too much of! Now, don't get me wrong, I have projects and patterns in mind for pretty much all of it, and I am currently working on a sundress. However, with that great sale (see my Photo Challenge post), I have now accumulated more than will fit in my sewing/craft closet. Since this room is shared with my hubby as a computer/music/sewing/craft/ room, I am invading his space, lol. I need to get this stuff neatly and carefully packed into my closet...I'll have to post a photo later on how I do that, I'm working on it right now, lol. :)

Have a blessed day!

Hot and humid = laziness for me too! You did a great job. I was too lazy to even attempt a garden.

  4. Thanks for coming to my blog to post a comment. Neat to meet a new friend. Is that a workout outfit you have on? Just wondering, since I'm a fitness teacher. Good job on tending the garden. Our soil is sooo good; it should be a crime NOT to garden. I feel for those out there trying to struggle in the heat and sandy soil.
